Quick answer: Amber bottles are used because the brown tint filters out most ultraviolet (UV) light and some of the blue light below about 450 nm. That helps protect light-sensitive products such as essential oils, face serums, vitamin C, herbal extracts and tinctures from fading or breaking down. Amber is not total protection, so store products away from direct sun as well. On the Zenvista website, amber glass dropper bottles start at ₹9.53 per piece and amber PET bottles at ₹13.62, at a pack of 100, before 18% GST.

Interest in amber bottles is rising in India. On Google Trends, "amber bottle" is up about 92% on last year, the fastest growth of the packaging terms we track (a relative index, not a count of searches). This guide answers the questions people search most: what an amber bottle is, why it is used, amber vs clear, glass vs plastic, dropper options, sizes and prices.
What is an amber bottle?
An amber bottle is a brown-tinted glass or plastic bottle made to filter light. In glass, the colour is usually created by adding iron, sulphur and carbon to the melt, so the tint runs through the whole wall. Amber plastic bottles are usually PET with an amber tint added. Both come with droppers, pumps, sprays, roll-ons and caps for oils, serums and personal care products.
Why are amber bottles used, and what is their purpose?
To shield the product inside from light. UV light and short-wavelength visible light can speed up oxidation and break down sensitive ingredients. This can change the colour, smell or strength of a product over time.
Amber glass absorbs most light below roughly 450 nm, which covers nearly all UV and part of the blue range. That is why pharmacies have long used amber bottles for light-sensitive medicines, and why many brands use them for oils and serums. Amber also gives a natural, apothecary look that suits herbal, ayurvedic and organic ranges.
Light is only one factor. Heat, air in the bottle and a poor seal also affect shelf life, so choose a tight cap and keep products cool.

Amber bottle vs clear bottle: which is better?
Amber is better for light-sensitive products; clear is better when you want to show the product.
| Amber bottle | Clear bottle | |
|---|---|---|
| Light protection | Filters most UV and some blue light | Lets most light through |
| Best for | Essential oils, serums, vitamin C, herbal extracts, tinctures, hair oils | Stable products where colour sells: toners, gels, shampoos, perfumes |
| Look | Natural, apothecary, premium | Clean, modern, shows the colour |
| Checking the fill level | Harder to see | Easy to see |
If your formula is stable in light and you want customers to see its colour, clear is fine. If you are unsure, amber is the safer choice. Your formulator or a simple stability test can confirm what your product needs.
Amber glass or amber plastic (PET): which should you choose?
Amber glass gives better light protection and a premium feel; amber PET is lighter, cheaper and shatter-resistant.
- Amber glass: the colour is part of the glass, which gives the most consistent light filtering. Glass also does not react with most oils and is the usual choice for essential oils and serums. It is heavier and can break in transit, so pack it well. Zenvista's amber glass range runs from 10 ml to 100 ml.
- Amber plastic (PET): a tinted plastic. It filters some UV, but generally less than amber glass, and the level depends on the tint and wall thickness. It is light, does not shatter and costs less, which suits shampoo, hair oil, body wash and lotion. Our amber PET range runs from 30 ml to 300 ml.
For strong essential oils or very light-sensitive actives, choose glass. For larger bathroom products, PET is the practical choice.

Which amber dropper bottle should you choose?
A euro dropper for essential oils, a rubber-bulb dropper for serums and oils, and a push-button dropper for a premium look.
- Euro dropper (orifice reducer): dispenses drop by drop without a pipette, suited to essential oils. The ZMG23 euro dropper bottle costs ₹9.53 for 10 ml and ₹12.13 for 30 ml.
- Glass pipette dropper with rubber bulb: the classic serum and face oil bottle. The ZMG19 black dropper starts at ₹13.87 for 10 ml, and the ZMG21 gold dropper at ₹16.46.
- Push-button dropper: a press-to-fill dropper with a more premium finish. The ZMG54 gold push-button dropper costs ₹52.09 for 30 ml.
- Larger droppers: the ZMG213 black dropper bottle goes up to 100 ml at ₹49.60.
Most of our amber droppers are glass. If you need plastic, our amber PET bottle with black dropper comes in 50 ml at ₹17.30 per piece. For more dropper sizes and prices, read our dropper bottles guide.
What products need amber bottles?
Anything that can fade, go rancid or lose strength in light. Common uses include:
- Essential oils and aromatherapy blends: usually in 10–30 ml amber glass dropper or euro dropper bottles.
- Face serums and vitamin C: vitamin C (ascorbic acid) oxidises easily, so an amber dropper or serum pump bottle is a common choice.
- Herbal extracts, tinctures and ayurvedic oils: amber glass droppers in 30–50 ml.
- Attar and roll-on perfume oils: 10 ml amber glass roll-ons.
- Hair oil, shampoo and body wash: 100–300 ml amber PET bottles with flip top, disc top or dispenser pump caps.
- Creams, balms and lip care: amber jars from 8 g to 100 g.

Which size amber bottle should you buy?
Match the size to the product and how fast it is used. Smaller bottles mean less air and light exposure each time the bottle is opened.
| Size | Typical use | Suggested closure |
|---|---|---|
| 10 ml | Essential oils, attar, samples, trial packs | Euro dropper, roll-on, dropper |
| 15–20 ml | Concentrated serums, oil blends | Dropper |
| 30 ml | Face serums, vitamin C, face oils, beard oils (the most common retail size) | Dropper, lotion pump, mist spray |
| 50 ml | Larger serums, tinctures, toners | Dropper, mist spray |
| 100 ml | Hair oil, toner, body oil, lotion | Flip top, screw cap, mist spray, dispenser pump |
| 200–300 ml | Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand wash | Dispenser pump, flip top |
We do not currently list 500 ml amber bottles. Our largest amber bottles are 300 ml PET, and our amber glass goes up to 100 ml.

Frequently asked questions
Are amber bottles light resistant?
Yes, amber glass filters most UV light and some blue light, which is why it is used for light-sensitive products. It is not completely lightproof, so keep products out of direct sun.
Why is amber glass more expensive than amber plastic?
Glass uses more energy to make, is heavier to ship and needs careful packing because it can break. On our website, a 100 ml amber glass mist spray bottle costs ₹41.60 per piece, while a 100 ml amber PET mist spray bottle costs ₹29.95, at a pack of 100.
Why are essential oils sold in amber bottles?
Many essential oils can oxidise and lose their scent and strength in light. Amber glass helps slow this, and glass does not react with most oils.
What is an amber PET bottle?
A plastic (PET) bottle tinted amber. It is lighter and shatter-resistant, and filters some light, though generally less than amber glass. Ours start at ₹13.62 per piece for 30 ml.
Where can I buy amber bottles?
